All gas and bullshit

Health minister Dr. Gobardhan was summarily summoned by Fakendra  Lodi. The call came at 8 PM. Feku, as Fakendra was endearingly called by his blind followers, had a serious pathalogical problem. Despite consuming almost one kilogram of isabgol, airlifted by the special executive jet of oil tycoon Adambani, from Unjha to Tughlakabad, Feku had failed to hit the jackpot. There was only thunder, no shower.

"Hey Rama ! If the clouds fail to deliver before my scheduled date at the White House, I will end up ejaculating only "Oh Bam Aah, Oh Bam Aah!" on the dinner table. I must cure myself of this congenital ailment immediately," Feku muttered to himself. "Gas works fine till the election time. In fact, the gas has had a mesmerizing effect on the voters who could not differentiate between fragrance and foul smell. Not any more, specially before world's biggest bluff who has successfully befooled everyone into believing that Uncle Sam epitomized virtue, morality and universal brotherhood."

Dr. Gobardhan hurriedly picked up his physician's bag and left post-haste to attend to the boss. A head-reeling smell hit the doctor as he entered Feku's master bedroom. "I need to get accustomed to this odor if I have to retain my job," he said to himself, barely stopping from plugging his nostrils with a handkerchief.

Feku's balloon pressure (BP) had crossed the double digit figure, keeping pace with the wholesale price index and the rate of inflation. "Boss, nothing to worry about. You will soon start siinging, 'Happy days are here again.' Look, the bhakts are still chanting 'Achche Din aa gaye, aa gaye'," Dr Gobardhan said trying hard to sound confident.

"Cut the crap. Can't you see I am suffering?," thundered Feku.  This gaseous problem refuses to solidify. You know, I can tackle any solid task that confronts me. But not this amorphous challenge of gas. Look at the irony. I am suffering because of non-stop generation of gas, while my patron tycoon is complaining of less gas find in the offshore Kinder Garten (KG) basein. My pet company GSPC too has failed to hit the gas despite having spent Rs. 8 k core."

"Saheb! Saheb!! Be cool, sit on the stool. You will be fine with just one dose of this specially concocted potion prepared by Baba Kamdev. Just one dose and presto, there will be a solid solution tomorrow morning, for sure. I am prepared to bet my Lage Raho Munnabhai degree," Dr Gobardhan said in a reassuring tone.

Whether the potion worked or failed will be known only at the dinner table of the White House.

Say 'No' to candles n cake

His pigtail stood up and started wriggling at a feverish pitch. Pandit Choitharam jumped up in ecstasy on reading the four-column news report in the Gujarati daily, Dainik Swadharm."Throw away candle, feed a cow" screamed the headline. He put on his reading glasses to read the full report.

"Don’t blow out candles on your birthday. It’s “western culture” and needs to be shunned. Instead, wear “swadeshi clothes” this day, do a havan, pray to the ishtadev, feed cows," advises Dinanath Batra, the author of the new textbook for school kids made compulsory for 42,000 schools in Gujarat by the state government.

"NaMo, Namo ! This is great news. At long last, after almost a thousand years of receiving slavish education, the children of swatantra Bharat will get to learn the greatness of Hindu culture," the pandit ejaculated, throwing a sideways look at his wife. He tied his pigtail into the shape of Omkaara, adjusted his sacred thread to cover the rotund tummy, put on his wooden sandals and walked out. "I must spread the good news among the Brahman samaj," he resolved, heading for the nearest Shiva temple where all the under-employed priests of the locality gathered in search of pious and gullible clients in the hope of getting the contract for performing Satyanarayan Katha.

Ever since the country became an enthusiastic partner of the global culture, this great nation's holiest of holy religion was facing the greatest threat to its very existence. "Need not fear anymore, now that Lord Shiiva, pleased with the chant of "NaMo, Namo", has annointed the Hindu Hriday Samrat as the first authentic Hindi king, India, which has been a Hindu nation only in our dreams, is going to become one in our very own life time," the deputy chief minister of a former colony of  Portugese was reported to have proclaimed in a TV interview. "I am a Christian by birth with a Hindu soul," he declared.

The author of the revolutionary textbook which promises to inculcate patriotism among children suddenly made his appearance on the national educational scene after the higher secondary school pass model-turned-starlet of the idiot box was made the HRD minister by the Hindu Hriday Samrat.  Dinanath Batra, the author, (Disclaimer: Not related by blood or wedlock to the notorious Trichologist Dr Batra who promises to grow rain forest in Sahara desert), had been hiberating all these years in a non-descript Saraswati Vidyalaya of a remote tribal village of the Anandamans.

Batra's existence and latent talent was discovered by Goondacharya, a self-motivated propagandist, who had given up his illustrious career in politics just for the love of the lady whom the BBC had described as the sexy sanyasin from Khajuraho. Goondaji - that's how thousands of selfless volunteers addressed him - recommened Batra's name to the honorable CM of Gujarat. A former school teacher, Ms. Happiness Petal, desperately needed some kind of magic wand that could transform her image of a puppet doll into that of an iron lady of independent mind befitting her status as the first woman chief minister of Gujarat.

Batra's textbook proved to be that magic wand. Besides prescribing the ideal recipe and ritual that should be followed during birthday celebrations, the textbook recommends to redraw the map of India as 'Akhand Bharat' to include what stands today as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar and observe August 14 as "Akhand Bharat Smriti Divas". This has inspired some enterprising coaching classes to introduce classes in cartography.

Happy days are here again for the likes of Pandit Choitharam and Saraswati Vidya Mandir coaching classes.

Mad Pratap Manic's Diplomatic Mission

By Nachiketa Desai

Mad Pratap Manic was in deep sleep enconsed in a bed next to Baba Kamdev. He was dead tired after a two-hour Bhoga Aasan the salwar-clad Yoga Guru had forced him to practice at Godhuli Bela, the auspicious time when herds of cows hoofed up dust while crossing into Bangladesh to rest in peace in the comforts of the five-star abattoir on the outskirts of Dhaka.

At the stroke of midnight, Maddie's (all PMs and PMs in waiting called Mad Pratap endearingly as Maddie) unlisted satellite phone beeped two and a half times. "Oh, this must be from the HQ. This is generally the time when the chief calls after concluding Pentagon's emergency meetings," Maddie whispered into Kamdev's right ear.

Kamdev gave a wicked smile, winked his normal eye and whispered back, "The chief's omnipresent spy camera must have already captured us practising Bhoga Aasan. Feel free to use the cellar to take the call."

Maddie scampered to the cellar. "Yes chief ! Shoot," he spoke into the mouthpiece while standing in attention, the right hand half raised in salute in the exact manner that all Sangh's rank and file were taught in the shakha.

"Wake up you ass, whole civilized world is screaming at us over the mess we have created in Palestine and Iraq. Having slaughtered  hundreds of women and children, the Zionists now want to push for the 'Final Solution'. We will handle the Israelis, don't you worry. You rush to Lahore where we have setup your rendezvous with Half Ease, our man there. We have promoted him to your rank so that you don't have to feel belittled in breaking bread with him," the chief told Maddie in an ominous, menacing tone.

"But, Sir, what about the Fuhrer and his gang of Himmlers, Goebels and Goerings? Would they approve of the glamorous assigment you are giving me? As it is I can sense a tinge of jealously towards me in their eyes," Maddie mumbled.

"Fuhrer is offshore playing Bric-Brac. The others have no say in the matter. Moreover, Motabhai can be relied upon to manage the Himmlers, Goebels and Goerings, all together and at one go.  It has been long since he organized a rave party on the top-floor of his  75-storey, 400,000-square-foot skyscraper home in Mohamaya nagari, " the chief assured Maddie.

Molly cuddled thus by the chief, Maddie returned to the master bedroom where, to his surprise, Baba Kamdev was alrady practicing Bhoga Aasana in changed pair of Salwars.

Maddie put on his favourite journalistic jacket, discarding the academic one, and set off for his rendezvous with Half Ease.

The rest is 'His' story.

Cyprus Resettlement Project

I was a member of an international peace initiative called 'Cyprus Resettlement Project' in 1972. The project envisaged restoring harmony between Greeks and Turks in Cyprus and resettling refugees from both the communities in the villages they were forced to abandon following large-scale communal violence immediately after the island nation gained independence from the British.

The Island nation of Cyprus had a population of over 600,000 and the size of a medium Indian district - 180 km long and 80 km wide. The population of Greek, who are orthodox Christians, was nearly 80 per cent while the Muslim Turks were 15 per cent, similar to the demography of India, in a way.

Both the communities looked at each other with suspicion though they inter-mingled during the day and would retire to their respective quarters at night. Every village had at least one Cafe where men would drink endless cups of black coffee and play cards and checkers.

The Turks knew Greek, but the Greek did not know Turkish. Like any majority community in the world, the Greeks could afford to be liberal, while the Turks were a closed community.

Being in my early 20s, I befriended the youth of my age, spending my time in Cafes and playing chess with them. On weekends, we would go out on picnic with both Greek and Turk young men and women.

During our stay in Cyprus, not a single incident of communal tension and violence was reported from any corner of the country. Our team had managed to convince members of both the communities to accept the refugees to come back to their own villages. A list of such refugees was prepared in consultation with the villagers.

However, we had to wind up our project all of sudden when the regular army from Turkey, which is just about 30 - 40 nautical miles across the Mediterranean sea, invaded the island and occupied half of it.
There was also an extremist orthodox Greek group which wanted Cyprus to be made a part of mainland Greece. But, Greece was several hundred nautical miles away from Cyprus.

Left to themselves, without the intervention and interference of political leaders and extremists, the Greeks and the Turks would have lived happily like good neighbors.

She transformed MCP Mohandas

As a teenager boy Mohandas, married to teenager girl Kastur, was what today's feminists would call a typical MCP - a tyrant who believed in subjugating his wife. He asserted his conjugal rights and was so possessive of his wife that he told her to seek his permission every time she wanted to visit a temple. Kastur defies the diktat and visits the temple. When confronted by Mohandas, she curtly replies: "No one can stop me from visiting the temple of God."

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, thus, learned from his wife Kasturba the first lesson of Satyagraha and non-violent civil disobedience, a state craft which made him a Mahatma.

Though the young barrister Gandhi got the credit for the success of his Satygraha against the oppressive all-white government of South Africa, it was Kasturba who courted arrest by defying the law which considered as illegal all marriages that were solemnized according to Hindu or Muslim rituals. She, not Gandhi was the first Satyagrahi. When in jail she was denied fruits and vegetables, she undertook an indefinite fast compelling General Smutts to concede her request for a vegetarian meal.

Gandhi was a libidinous young man who had fathered four children. Realizing that he would not be able to pursue a life dedicated to the cause of the people without taking a vow of celebacy, Gandhi made Kastur to take a pledge with him. She gave her consent willingly.

Since then and till the day Kasturba died in Aga Khan Palace, Pune on February 22, 1944, the husband and wife called each other by the names Bapu and Ba (father and mother).

This and other such aspects of Kasturba's fiercely independent personality and yet complete devotion to her husband's goals and ideals have been depicted in a two-hour play on her written by the 88-year-old Narayan Desai whose four-volume biography of Gandhiji 'My life is my Message" has won wide acclaim.

This is Narayan Desai's fist attempt at writing a full-length play for any professional theatre group. He has been ably helped in this maiden venture by eminent Gujarati theatre director-cum-actor Aditi Desai whose influence on the playwright's pen comes out brilliantly in the dialogues of various actors.

The inaugural show of the play was staged on February 22 at the auditorium of Gujarat Vidyapith, a university founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920.

The Hindi version of this Gujarati play is getting ready and is planned to be staged outside Gujarat shortly.

Clay as ornament

Chennai-based Malini Kalyanam gave up her career with a multi-national corporation to become a potter

Swimming against the tide runs in her genes. So does love for mother earth. While women in southern states of India are famously crazy about gold jewellery, Malini Kalyanam shuns gold and wears pendant and bangles made from clay. She designs and makes exquisite jewellery, flower bouquets, wall-hangings and a variety of other artefacts from clay in her studio on the outskirts of Chennai.

“Besides being eco-friendly, clay has immense medicinal value. I was cured of my obesity within months of taking up pottery as my hobby,” says Malini whose efforts at weight reduction through physical exercise and diet had failed to achieve the desired result. “Using clay face-pack also got rid of my dark spots and dry skin on my face,” she adds.

She is so passionate about clay that she has given up using cosmetics as well. “I have clients now who ask for clay face-packs that I prepare from different types of clay,” she says. Malini sources clay from the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnata as also from Tamil Nadu. She now wants to source vegetable and natural dyes from groups that are engaged in dyeing fabrics and wood with eco-friendly natural colours from Kerala and Kutch in Gujarat.
“Like most children, I too was naturally drawn to clay and would soil my hands and clothes while coming back from school and would get scolded by my father for dirtying myself,” she says with a naughty spark in her eyes. “It is a different story that father would often reminisce about Mahatma Gandhi using mud pack to control his high blood pressure,” she adds with a chuckle.

Malini’s father, V Kalyanam, 91 was Mahatma Gandhi’s secretary during his last years after the latter’s release from jail in 1944 till his death in 1948. In fact, it was his love for gardening that had propelled Kalyanam to quit government job and go to Gandhiji’s ashram in Sewagram. “But when Gandhiji came to know that I knew typing, he stopped me from working in the farm and made me a typist again,” says Kalyanam.

However, at 91, Kalyanam today sweeps the street with a broom every morning and grows vegetables on the terrace garden of his house in Central Chennai. “In just four years of his association with Gandhiji, father imbibed all his values and is now trying to relive them,” says Malini.

But Malini is no Gandhian. After her MBA from a US university, Malini joined an MNC in Bangalore as manager, human resources. “One day, I saw a woman, in her early 40s, giving a demonstration of her work of art on a potter’s wheel in a shopping mall in Bangalore. I asked her if she would teach me pottery. She agreed and my love and passion for pottery grew as I kept on learning from her,” she says.
“Initially, I worked on a small potter’s wheel which I installed in my home. School children from the neighbourhood would come to watch me give various shapes to the lump of clay. Fascinated, they would ask me to try their hands on the wheel,” recalls Malini. Her joy knew no bounds when she noticed that working with the clay – preparing the clay, pounding and moulding it – the mere contact with the clay was having a beneficial effect on her health and physique.

“I had this tendency towards obesity and no amount of dieting and physical exercise was helping me reduce my weight. But after I started working with clay, not only did I become lean and thin but the texture and lustre of my skin too improved,” she says.

Two years ago she decided to quit her job and become a full-time potter. “I opened a studio in our bungalow on the outskirts of Chennai. The studio is equipped with a motorized potter’s wheel and an electric kiln. There, I conduct workshops of various durations ranging from a day to a week,” says Malini.

Through her personal website – www.malinipottery.com – and through various social networking sites, Malini has managed to attract buyers for her pottery from Europe, the USA and Southeast Asian countries.

“I have held a couple of exhibitions in Chennai, but I am not targeting domestic buyers. I make very limited number of pottery and specialize in jewellery, wall-hangings, flower vase and the like. These are much in demand abroad,” she says.

Malini, who also actively takes part in various social work programmes, wants to teach pottery to poor women in association with some not for profit organizations so that they can earn their livelihood by making and selling pottery for the fashion conscious buyers.

On Mission Music

Director-cum-chief mentor of Indo Asian News Service, KPK Kutty is on a mission to teach Carnatic music to school children of rural Kerala

While many of his contemporaries became media advisors to Prime Ministers or secured other plum positions in Delhi, veteran journalist K P K Kutty has chosen to lead a hermit’s life in his ancestral village of Kavasseri in Palakkad district of Kerala.

The 78-year-old journalist, while continuing to mentor the editorial staff of Indo Asian News Service (IANS), devotes most of his time as a music teacher to 350 school children in over a dozen village temples in a radius of 25 km around Kavasseri. He wakes up at 4 in the morning, performs pooja and off he goes to various temples to teach music to children in the age group of 5-10 years. He has fixed each day of the week for visits to different temples.

Dussehra is a special day for Kutty and the children as it is on this auspicious day that mothers and grandmothers bring their children to the main village temple to be initiated into literacy and music by the priests. Clad in Dhoti and Angavastram, with sandalwood paste smeared on his temple, Kutty blesses the children and makes them recite the complete octave –Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, Sa.

Kutty Sir, as he is endearingly called by the children and their parents in the area, left Delhi six years ago to settle down in his ancestral village to carry on the legacy of his father Kavasseri Vaidyanathaiyer  Parasurama Sastrigal, the chief priest of the village temple and a renowned music teacher.

Ironically, it was his father who had advised his teenage son Kutty to give up music and learn English instead. Kutty went ahead with his English study but did not leave his Veena, a musical instrument his blind elder sister inspired him to play.

Born in a family of musicians,  Kutty started playing the Veena at the age of six. He was inspired by his blind elder sister Parvathi Ammal, who had been taken to Thiruvananthapuram by Kutty's father  to learn Veena under the tutelage of Travancore Palace aasthaana vainika Mannapra Anantharama Bhagavathar.

After his matriculation in 1949, Kutty worked for nine years as a member of the non-combatant accounts staff in the Indian Air Force (IAF). During the period, with considerable free time at hand, he made considerable advance in his music study, devoting a lot of energy and time to surveying the contribution of Kerala composers such as Irayimman Thampi, his daughter Kutty Kunju Thankachi, Mahakavi K C Kesava Pillai, Kuttamathu and Thulaseevanam, besides Swati Thirunal. He had already acquainted himself with the Carnatic music trinity during his school days in Kavasseri.

Life in the air force station in Delhi was quite rewarding for him. The working hours being only from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm, he had ample time to not only practice veena but also pursue his higher education. Studying privately, he did MA in English literature in 1958.

His interest and knowledge in Carnatic music was already known to friends in Tamilian and Malayalee circles in Delhi.  His first vocal concert in front of a discerning audience took place in Sarojini Nagar in 1956. Among the audience was a violinist, Gayatri Sastri, who spoke to him soon after the concert. On learning that Kutty was a Veena player, she offered him an unused Veena  lying in her home. Kutty insisted he wouldn't want it gratis. She then asked for just Rs. 20 and Kutty paid her Rs.30 in a liberal deal. Kutty has been playing the same Veena past 55 years.

While pursuing his passion for music, Kutty was also fond of writing short articles, a hobby which changed the course of his life and made him leave an accountant’s job to become a journalist. One such piece that he wrote was on the metamorphosis of a girl student of Kavasseri who he ran into on a Delhi road in 1958 while still in the IAF. The one-time shy, orthodox village girl, his senior by about four years, was attired in modern city clothes, wearing goggles and riding a cycle. Kutty interviewed her and wrote a piece which he sent to D.R.Mankekar, then  editor-in-chief of The Indian Express. Though the piece was not published, the editor offered him the job of a trainee subeditor.

After working with The Indian Express till April 1961, Kutty joined the United News of India (UNI) and became a chief subeditor in just two years. He served UNI for 32 years and retired in 1993 after he had headed the news agency as chief editor and general manager for more than five years.

The first 40 years of Kutty's Delhi stay was marked by journalistic assignments to more than 40 countries. Even while he worked as a journalist in a national news agency, accompanying Prime Ministers on their foreign visits, Kutty kept live contact with his village folks, visiting them once a year on his annual leave. On such annual visits, Kutty would spend time with the village children, teaching them the rudimentary of classical Carnatic music.

After his retirement from UNI, Kutty joined Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), a news agency set up in 1994 as director and chief mentor, a position he holds even today. “Essentially, I monitor the news feeds and features issued by IANS every night and carry out the necessary changes and pass on instructions to the editorial staff. This does not take more than two hours,” says Kutty who, though a director of the company, takes Rs. 20,000 as a monthly honorarium, “Just enough to take care of my daily needs and transport cost to visit the temples around Kavasseri.”

Between 1960 and 1995 Kutty participated in scores of music programmes and held concerts in Delhi. He used to have regular interactive sessions with eminent classical music singers on compositions of Kerala vaggeyakaras.

A 200-minute cultural programme titled "A Day in Kerala", conceived by  Omchery's Delhi Experimental Theatre and featuring more than 200 singers and theatre artistes, including Mrs. Leela Omchery and  Kutty's wife Rajalakshmi, captured the imagination of Delhiites, especially Malayalees who account for about 1.4 million in Delhi's population of  18 million.

In 2005, Kutty survived cancer, a variety known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). “It was Veena which helped me recover from the trauma that I went through because of chemotherapy which had caused the loss of my hair. I used to remain confined to my home to avoid embarrassment due to loss of hair. I utilized the time to play Veena,” he recalls. Today, Kutty’s hair is like a lion’s mane, a distinctive feature by which he is known along with his walrus moustaches.

A music concert by Kutty in  Kavasseri's Parakkattu Sree Bhagavathi temple in August 2006 along with his US-based cousin, K. Balasubramaniam, led to his being pressured by friends in the Ottupura agraharam to return to the village since there has been no music teacher there after his father's death in 1966.

Kutty began his latest music lessons in Kavasseri on November 15, 2006, with 54 children attending the inaugural class at the Parakkattu Sree Bhagawathi temple.

Kutty used to teach a dozen-odd children music whenever he used to come to the village on two months' leave while in the IAF. Today  Kutty's students number around 350 spread over a dozen villages covering an area of  over 250 sq km.

Besides music, Kutty also had a tryst with the film industry. Film producer Joy Thomas'   1987 Malayalam feature film "New Delhi" saw Kutty playing  the role of  chief editor of a newspaper  with hero Mammootty working under him as a reporter. The film, which was a hit, was then made in Hindi, Kannada and Telugu, with Kutty doing the same role in all the three versions.

However, Kutty was not enamored by the glitz and power of both the tinsel world and the national capital and has chosen to lead a hermit’s life in his ancestral village, spreading love and music among school children.
